Moreover, Sri Lanka had won the ICC T20 World Cup once, in 2014, when it faced off against India in an exciting finale. They were also runner-ups twice, once in 2009 and 2012 each. Namibia is yet to win an ICC T20 World Cup. Looking at the ICC Twenty20 rankings of both the teams, Sri Lanka ranks 10th, whereas Namibia stands at 16th.

History of Sri Lanka vs Namibia rivalry

So far, Sri Lanka has faced off against Namibia only once in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021. Despite some early setbacks, Sri Lanka managed to recover and win comfortably. Their bowlers set the tone by limiting Namibia to 96 runs. However, Sri Lanka got off to a shaky start in their chase, losing three wickets in 26 runs in 8.2 overs. Luckily Rajapaksa and Avishka put forth an unbroken 74-run fourth-wicket stand that won the game for the team. Namibia used eight bowlers to break the partnership but in vain.

HeadtoHead record of Sri Lanka and Namibia

Both teams have faced each other only once. Sri Lanka won that match with seven wickets and 37 balls remaining.

Sri Lanka cricket team players to watch for in 2022

Wanindu Hasaranga

Wanindu Hasaranga can be a real game-changer for Sri Lanka in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Last year's T20 World Cup saw this young leg spinner become the No. 1 bowler on the ICC rankings, and he lived up to the title too. He finished the competition with 16 wickets under his belt, more than any other player, and did so at a 9.75 average and a 5.2 economy rate.
Hasaranga doesn't require much off the pitch, and he bowls wicket-to-wicket. His greatest strength lies in bowling a terrific wrong un that many batters find challenging to play.

Charith Asalanka

Another gem from Sri Lanka is Charity Asalanka. Asalanka emerged as a stand-out top-order batsman in the 2021 T20 World Cup. The versatile left-hander entered last year's T20 World Cup only with the experience of three T20s but managed to score 231 runs to finish as the tournament's fifth-highest scorer.
The 24-year-old made his debut in all three match formats for Sri Lanka in 2021. Unlike many modern cricketers, who come out swinging with a heavy bat, Asalanka plays good cricketing shots. He backs the ability to score runs even on some really good balls. As a reward for his incredible performance, Asalanka was given vice-captaincy during the recent Australian series.

Mahesh Theekshana

Mahesh Theekshana started his international career in September last year. But, he is already showing all the signs of a master player, even earning the nickname 'Mystery Spinner.' The 21-year-old has enjoyed a lot of success in the T20 World Cup's early stages. Instead of turning the ball, he skips it, making it difficult for batsmen to nail his bowling.
Mahesh Theekshana was also the Player of the Match when Sri Lanka and Namibia clashed in the T20 World Cup. Mahesh took three crucial wickets while giving just 25 runs.

Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara

Sri Lanka's bowling arsenal is not just spin bowlers. Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara can deliver bowling speeds up to 140kph in every match. During the T20 World Cup, 30-years-old Chameera took seven wickets, and 24-years-old Kumara took eight.
Though Chameera's career was plagued with injuries in the early stages, he has regained his form over the last couple of years. Not only has he improved his speed, but he's also developed variants that can even make an expert batsman sweat through the helmet.

Dasun Shanaka

Dasun Shanaka is a significant member of the Sri Lankan roster. He is an explosive middle-order batsman and a solid right-arm seam bowler. Shanaka rose to prominence after smashing the Sri Lankan record of 16 sixes in a 123-run innings against Saracens Sports Club in an AIA Premier T20 competition. He had smashed 131 runs off 48 balls against the Galle Cricket Club just a week before. However, his bowling sealed his reputation in the international scene when he took three wickets while only giving away 16 runs against India on a Pune green top. Shanaka was also outstanding in the recent T20 series. He will undoubtedly be a key player for Sri Lanka in the 2022 World Cup.

Namibia cricket team players to watch for in 2022

David Wiesel

David Wiese is a vital member of Namibia's squad. He is an intimidating all-rounder who can take the pace off the ball and play a powerful, lofted shot. In the Vitality Blast Championship in 2018, he took 41 wickets and crossed the 500-run mark while batting. His breathtaking 171 runs off 126 balls in a 50-over defeat against Hampshire was one of the best innings in the county's 2019 season.
Wiese became eligible to play for Namibia in 2021. In his debut with the T20 World Cup team, he won two Player of the Match awards in his first three games, helping Namibia qualify for the next stage of the tournament.

Jan Nicolaas Frylinck

Jan Nicolaas Frylinck is a Namibian cricketer who was born in South Africa. This all-rounder holds the record of the third-best ODI bowling figures for any player in a debut match. He also has an outstanding record of taking six wickets for 24 runs in an inning.

Merwe Gerhard Erasmus

Merwe Gerhard Erasmus is the current captain of the Namibia cricket team and one of its most exceptional players. With 268 runs in nine matches, he was Namibia's best run-scorer in last year's World Cup. He was also the Player of the Tournament.

Likely predictions for the Sri Lanka vs Namibia match

Previously when these teams locked horns, it was a one-sided affair due to Sri Lanka's exceptional bowlers. However, owing to Namibia's upgraded line-up, predicting the outcome for the next Sri Lanka and Namibia T20 World Cup match cannot be made easily.
Overall, Namibia has performed well in the 2021 T20 World Cup. They defeated Ireland, Netherland, and Scotland in the first stage. The team has much to look forward to with players like Gerhard, Ruben, Frylemick, and Wiesel. However, they have a fair share of challenges and problems to address. Predominantly, being a relatively young side, their lack of experience can be a drawback. It was especially obvious in the second stage in the tournament when the team couldn't find its footing.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka, despite losing the Australian and Indian T20 series, continues to stay strong. They have ended up with many positives, especially with Dasun Shanaka, Pathum Nissanka, and Lahiru Kumara, who had showcased some great individual performances.
It does look like Sri Lanka might have the upper hand over Namibia in their upcoming 2022 World Cup match. However, no matter who wins, the clash will be exciting for the fans.
