St Kitts and Nevis Patriots History

The St Kitts and Nevis Patriots is a cpl team created in 2015 to replace the now-defunct Antigua Hawksbills. The Hawksbills were disbanded due to match scheduling issues and the lack of a private owner, and four of their players - Carlos Brathwaite, Devon Thomas, Orlando Peter and Justin Athanze were included in the first draft of the Kitts and Nevis team.

Previous Coaches and Captains of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots

South Africa's Eric Simons, who had earlier coached the IPL team Delhi Daredevils (Delhi Capitals), was chosen as the coach during the Patriots' inaugural season in 2015. Their captain was Marlon Samuels, who has won the T20 World Cup twice with the West Indies. He struck 325 runs in the first season at a strike rate of 130, which included 4 half-centuries.
The Patriots have also been captained by Chris Gayle, who led them to the final in 2017.
The Patriots are currently captained by Dwayne Bravo, who has won three CPL titles with the Trinbago Knight Riders. They are currently coached by Simon Helmot, who was earlier the coach for the Trinbago Riders.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots' Key Players

Here are some of the key players for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots squad over the years.
Evin Lewis: Evin has played for the Patriots since their 2015 debut and has proven to be a handy opener. He has scored 1702 runs from 67 innings at an average of 26.18. He has an astonishing strike rate of nearly 150, which is one of the highest in the league for a player who has competed for 5 or more seasons. Furthermore, he has 8 30-plus scores, 13 half-centuries, and 1 century to his name. In the 2015 season, he scored the 3rd highest runs for his team, only behind Marlon Samuels and Martin Guptill. In 2017, he opened the batting with his mentor Chris Gayle, and they led the team to the final, where they finished as runners-up.
His great century against a strong Trinbago Knight Riders squad ensured that the team reached the semi-finals in 2021. His performances in the top order helped him land his team their first CPL title.
Sheldon Cottrell: Sheldon Cottrell is an underappreciated bowler from the Caribbean Premier League who has given his heart and soul to the team. He, too, has played for the Patriots since their 2015 debut. In just 46 games, he has picked up 61 wickets with an amazing strike rate of 15.60. He also has 7 3-wicket hauls. Sheldon's consistent performances also earned him a spot in the West Indies national squad. He was instrumental in taking the team to the playoffs in 3 consecutive seasons.
Fabian Allen: Fabian Allen is an all-rounder who had plied his trade for many years with the Patriots. Between 2017 and 2021, he scored 474 runs in 25 innings at a remarkable strike rate of 162.30, and a healthy average of 29.62. Fabian is also a decent bowler, picking up 14 wickets at a strike rate of 27.92.
Fabian's performances in the CPL rewarded him with a spot in West Indies' limited over sides, and he was recently featured in the ODI and T20I series held against India in February 2022. He was one of the best performers on the team.

Past performances of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the CPL

The Patriots did not have a great stage when they entered the competition. They had back-to-back bottom place finishes in 2015 and 2016 and managed only 2 wins in 10 games in the latter year. The 2017 season proved to be the start of an upward trend for them. They finished second in the league table and managed to reach the final. However, they lost by a narrow 3-wicket margin to the Trinbago Knight Riders in a low-scoring affair.
Similarly, in the 2018 season, they reached the playoffs, where they chased down 192 against the Jamaica Tallawahs in their eliminator. However, they fell short against their constant nemesis, the Trinbago Knight Riders, who reached the final and won the title. In 2019, they were defeated yet again by the Trinbago team in the first eliminator. However, the 2020 season proved to be a disaster for them. They won just 1 out of 10 games, with 1 being washed out, and finished at the bottom of the table.
But their fortunes changed in 2021. In the league stages, they finished 3rd in the table, behind the Guyana Amazon Warriors on points difference. They comfortably beat the Guyana team in the first semi-final, thanks to Evin Lewis' unbeaten 77 off just 39 balls. They had a close-fought game in the final against the Lucia Kings, chasing down 160 off the final ball, thus winning their first and only ever title.

Likely Predictions for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in 2022

The Patriots have a great combination of local and foreign players. However, some of their key players such as Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo are currently aged 42 and 38, which is considered old for a professional cricketer. If the Patriots find a few key backup players, then they can retain the title.
