In 2015, Red Chillies Entertainment, which is owned by Shahrukh Khan and the Mehta Group, purchased a stake in the team. These are the same members who are also the owners of the Kolkata Knight Riders, a 2-time IPL winning team from India. Then, the team's name was "Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel". However, in 2016, when Red Chillies took over the team's operations, they renamed the team as the "Trinbago Knight Riders".

Trinbago Knight Riders’ Key Players

Trinbago Knight Riders have had multiple players over the years who have led their team to glory. One of their most prominent players is none other than T20 World Cup winner Dwayne Bravo. Dwayne, who has also won multiple IPL titles with the Chennai Super Kings, is a handy all-rounder. He can attack at the end of an innings, and is one of the best death bowlers in the world even today. Dwayne Bravo played for the team from 2013 to 2020, scoring 965 runs in 60 innings at an average of 22.97. He has scored the third-most runs for the team, only behind Colin Munro and Darren Bravo.

Dwayne Bravo also has the highest number of wickets for Trinbago Knight Riders, taking 106 wickets in 79 matches, at an average of 21.96. His 2/30 in the 2018 final alongside Khary Pierre's 3-wicket-haul helped Trinbago claim their third title.
Meanwhile, Trinbago's best batter has been New Zealander Colin Munro, who has scored 1881 runs from 59 innings, at an average of 38.38, with one hundred and fourteen half-centuries to his name. Colin's 29 off 23 balls, with 3 sixes, was a major contribution toward their 2017 CPL win, which was a low-scoring affair.
Brendon McCullum was also the marquee player for the Trinbago Knight Riders. He played from 2016 to 2018. Brendon scored 836 runs from 33 innings, at an average of 30.96. He had 6 half-centuries, with a top score of 91. His great strike rate of 146.4 at the top of the innings laid the platform for the other batsmen to flourish, and he was a part of 2 title wins for the team in 2017 and 2018.
Brendon McCullum was also appointed as the head coach for the Trinbago Knight Riders in 2019. Under his coaching, the team won its fourth title in 2020.

Trinbago Knight Riders: Coaches and Captains

Trinbago were coached by Simon Helmot, who led the team to its first CPL title. He was replaced in 2017 by Simon Katich, who won the team two back-to-back titles. Brendon McCullum was their coach during their 4th title win. Their current coach is Imran Jan, a former West Indies first-class cricketer.
Trinbago won their first 3 titles under the leadership of Dwayne Bravo. They won the 2020 championship thanks to Kieron Pollard's captaincy, who is also the current captain.

Trinbago Knight Riders’ past performances in the CPL

Trinbago did not have a great start during the initial stages of the tournament. In the 2013 competition, which included the now-defunct Antigua Hawksbills CPL team, the team finished with 3 wins out of 8 and placed 4th in the table. They reached the semi-finals, where they were bundled out for just 103 by the Guyana Amazon Warriors, who won by 7 wickets. The 2014 season was slightly better for the Trinbago Knight Riders. They had six credible wins in 10 matches, but due to a close-fought season, they could finish no higher than fourth in the table. Again, a semi-final finish was all that they could muster.
However, the team's course began to change in 2015, when Red Chillies began an official takeover. The team finished 3rd in the league stages, yet they managed to go all the way and win their first title. They faced the second-placed Guyana Amazon Warriors in their semi-final, which they won comfortably by 6 wickets. In the final, they faced the Barbados Tridents, who were expected to win comfortably. However, they pulled off an upset and won the final by 20 runs. Dwayne Bravo was adjudged to be the player of the tournament. He also created a tournament record for most wickets in a single Caribbean Premier League, scalping 28 wickets in just 13 matches.
In 2016, Trinbago were on course to reach the final. In the semifinals, they faced Jamaica Tallawahs, who piled on 195/7 thanks to Andre Russell's 44-ball hundred. However, due to the rains, the DLS revised target was set to 130 runs off just 12 overs. Trinbago fell short and were knocked out.
In 2017, the team managed to stitch together another come-from-behind victory. They were outclassed by St. Kitts and Nevis in the first qualifier despite topping the group stages. However, they won the final against the same team, thanks to Kevon Cooper's all-round performance. In 2018, they won a second championship in a row, becoming the first CPL team to win three titles. Their fourth title won in 2020 made them the most successful team of all time in the CPL T20 league.

Trinbago Knight Riders’ performance in CPL 2021

In the 2021 edition of the CPL, Trinbago reached the semifinals with ease. However, they were shocked by the St. Lucia Kings, who handed them a defeat of 21 runs. The tournament reverted to a semi-final-and-final format instead of the usual qualifier-and-eliminator playoff approach. Nevertheless, Trinbago will have been disappointed by their performance.

Players retained by Trinbago Knight Riders for 2022

The following is the tentative squad set for the Trinbago Knight Riders for the 2022 season.
  • Kieron Pollard (captain)
  • Akeal Hosein
  • Ali Khan
  • Anderson Phillip
  • Colin Munro
  • Darren Bravo
  • Dinesh Ramdin
  • Isuru Udana
  • Jayden Seales
  • Khary Pierre
  • Leonardo Julien
  • Lendl Simmons
  • Ravi Rampaul
  • Sandeep Lamichhane
  • Sikander Raza
  • Sunil Narine
  • Tion Webster
The Hero CPL T20 for the year 2022 will be held in late August, and the final will take place on September 16, 2022. The Trinbago team seems rather balanced, although they will miss the services of Dwayne Bravo. They could certainly stage yet another comeback and clinch their fifth CPL title.
